Brian's DVDs available today

Brian officially launched his first two Brian's Beginners DVDs today on Channel Five. They are part of a series of DVDs he plans to choreograph to help people learn to dance.

A limited number of the DVDs are available now from Amazon.

He wrote this message on his Facebook page:

ANNOUNCEMENT: BRIAN'S BEGINNERS by Brian Fortuna on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 6:21pm
It gives me great pleasure to officially announce my newest project: Brian's Beginners! This marks the start of a large project for me and I couldn't be more excited about it! As you know, I am very passionate about all aspects of dance and teaching is one of the best ways to share my passion with others. I have recorded two awesome new DVDs focusing on partner dancing. I've made sure that they are easy to learn, even for those feel that they have two left feet (a belief I never subscribe to). Anyone can dance and everyone should dance!

The ability to teach large groups of people at the same time is a long-held ambition of mine. I'll show you everything you need to know and help you every step of the way and, as an added bonus, you can learn in the comfort of your own home!
In my DVDs - one in Latin and one in Ballroom - you'll see me teach a class of complete beginners. These amazing people had very little or absolutely no dance experience prior to my classes and you will be learning right along with them. It is very important to me that the lessons are easy to follow and fun to learn, because that's what learning to dance is all about. Each DVD has two classes; Cha Cha and Swing in Latin, and Waltz and Foxtrot (my favorite Ballroom dance) in Ballroom. They officially launch worldwide in 2011.
While I was making these DVDs, my gorgeous TAFFs were always on my mind. I have had the opportunity to meet many of you through Strictly Come Dancing, Burn the Floor, cabaret shows, and lessons. I know there are still many of you I haven't met yet and I look forward to doing so in the future. One of the most amazing things about all of you is your unconditional support of everything I do. I feel truly honored by it and it makes an enormous difference in my life. It is very, very important to me to acknowledge this and to show my appreciation for each and every one of you.

I spoke at length with the production team behind Brian's Beginners and I have arranged for a LIMITED SUPPLY of both of my DVDs to be available for sale beginning TODAY, Thursday, December 9th! The DVDs are available DIRECTLY from the producers at Amazon Marketplace priced £9.99 each. This is the only place on the web that they can buy from the actual production company who worked with me on this project.

Go to this link to get your copies today: Brian's Beginners.

So, snap up your copy of my DVDs and start planning your Brian's Beginners Dance Party! I check my Facebook and Twitter regularly, so I'm looking forward to seeing your photos, hearing about your progress, and how you are enjoying the lessons.

Play fair in fashion says Ali

Shoppers are used to seeing fair trade items in the supermarket and can buy them knowing that they are helping food producers get better prices for their products. But what about other items?

Ali is giving her support to the Fairtrade Foundation's Great Cotton Stitch Up which is campaigning to make fair trade cotton more widely used by fashion companies and designers in the UK, and to raise awareness of the issue.

Cotton farmers in West Africa are unable to raise their prices because they are undercut by producers in Europe and the USA who benefit from huge government subsidies. By producing fair trade cotton, the African farmers can earn more from their crops. Fair trade clothes are already available in Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Debenhams and some supermarkets.

Ali modelled clothes from a fair trade fashion collection and was photographed by Trevor Leighton. Other celebs giving their support to the campaign were Lisa Snowdon and Mica Paris. The photos are on display at City Hall in London's South Bank for another week before going on tour.

The photo shoot was featured in the Telegraph and Mirror newspapers.

Ali to star in Agatha Christie play

Ali will star in a touring production of a play by Agatha Christie called Verdict.

The play opens at the Theatre Royal in Windsor on 11th January before going to Bath, Cheltenham, Wolverhampton before finishing at the Palace Theatre in Southend, Essex, on 12th March.

Ali is appearing in the Agatha Christie Theatre Company production with Dawn Steele from Monarch of the Glen.

Links to book tickets are on the producer's website Bill Kenright Ltd.

"My foxtrot frock"

Ali features in the November issue of Company magazine in the beautiful dress that she wore to dance the foxtrot with Brian in Strictly last year. She says: "I'll never forget how incredible I felt wearing it that night." They danced to Michael Buble's I Haven't Met You Yet.

Unfortunately Ali didn't get to keep the frock which is from Dancesport International - it has been sold to a fan who bought it for £1,400.

Ali goes to the ball to support breast cancer awareness month

Ali has joined other celebrities to show their support for events taking place in October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

She attended the Breast Cancer Campaign's annual Pink Ribbon Ball on Saturday 9th October at the Dorchester Hotel in London, along with Camilla Dallerup, Kevin Sacre and Martine McCutcheon.

Ali spoke at the event and said afterwards: "I've had a really nice time tonight and it's so nice to see a room full of supporters who want to make a difference to people affected by breast cancer. The cause is really important to me and so I'm proud to support Breast Cancer Campaign and the fabulous work they do in helping the many thousands of women affected by this disease."

Ali, who lost her grandmother and aunt to breast cancer, spoke to Prima magazine this month about her family's loss. This year's ball is expected to raise more than £200,000 for the charity which funds research into breast cancer in the UK. Kevin Sacre tweeted a pic of Camilla and Ali together on the night.

Other events taking part this month include Pink Aerobics, which Ali helped publicise, and the QVC Breast Cancer Care Event this week on Wednesday 13th October. Shoppers at the QVC television channel can raise money for Breast Cancer Care when they buy items in the evening show from 8pm. (Thank you to Pennybel from the DS Ali & Brian Appreciation thread for highlighting this event.)

Ali and Brian split up

Ali and Brian have split up, according to a report in the Daily Mail last week.

I set up this blog several months ago to follow Ali and Brian's professional work after being inspired by watching them on Strictly last year. It is easy to say that their personal relationship should stay personal but for Ali and Brian, their personal relationship was played out in public from the beginning. Even when it was in its early stages, their emotional connection jumped out from the television screen - transforming their dance performances into something truly special. It was this that many, many people responded to.

They went on to perform together in the Strictly celeb tour, at Blackpool and Paignton when Ali stood in for Kristina, and then in Burn the Floor. I thank them for all their performances - like many of their supporters I have been inspired by them to go and see some wonderful dance events - the pro tour, Brian and Kristina, and then Burn the Floor. Without them, I know that I would never have had these experiences.

This blog will continue to follow their careers and other endeavours. Ali has shown a strong commitment to breast cancer charities and I will support this as much as I can. And I know that Brian will soon be back performing live - on some stage, somewhere in the world anyway. He is also involved in a dance DVD which will be released at the end of November and possibly a TV show.

I wish them health and happiness in whatever they choose to do. Thank you, Ali and Brian.

Ali and Kristina step into the night for charity

Ali and Kristina took part in Step Into the Night, a sponsored 10 kilometre walk in London, last night to help raise money for vulnerable children in the UK and Rwanda. They were among several celebrities and more than 1,000 sponsored walkers who pounded London's streets in aid of charity.

The walk started at Potters Fields near London Bridge at 7pm and took a circular route which included Tower Bridge, to finish back at the starting point.

The event was sponsored by Barclays Bank and was in aid of UNICEF's campaign to provide education to children in Rwanda, and the Have a Heart charity, run by Heart FM radio in aid of disadvantaged children in London.

Other celebs who took part included Joe Calzaghe and Michelle Williams who is in this year's Strictly.

Ali raises a cuppa for forces charity

Ali helped to launch The Big Brew Up in aid of SSFA, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, at Wellington Barracks in London today.

The event runs from 4th to 10th October and encourages people to raise money by organising a get-together over a cup of tea. Money raised goes to the SSFA charity which helps members of the forces and their families. This year the SSFA celebrates its 125th anniversary.

Ali said: “When you’re serving overseas there’s nothing like a nice cup of tea to remind you of home. By holding their own Big Brew Ups, people can take some time out with family, friends or colleagues for a cuppa and think about the dedication of our troops and their families.”

She is pictured with soldiers from the Grenadier Guards. During Strictly last year, Ali visited Catterick garrison with other celebs and dancers to meet the soldiers there.

Today's event follows a series of charity and publicity engagements by Ali since Burn the Floor ended on 4th September.

On Monday 13th September, Ali helped raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust by trading shares during the charity trading day in Canary Wharf, London, organised by city firm BGC Partners in memory of New York colleagues who died on 11th September 2001.

Congratulations also to the TAFFS who raised £300 to purchase a BTF poster signed by Brian, Ali and all the London cast. The money will go to the Steve Waugh Foundation which helps children with rare diseases in Asia and Africa.

Burn the Floor Review, Shaftesbury Theatre, London, 28th August 2010

Any doubts over Ali Bastian's role in Burn the Floor are quashed by surveying the audience at last Saturday's matinee. Mums, dads, kids, grannies and grandads, visiting central London for the afternoon, then back home on the afternoon train. Some, no doubt, grew up in a ballroom dancing tradition, others are learning to dance now; many more, like myself, have come to know it through watching Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday nights.

Without the presence of Ali and her partner Brian Fortuna - the English rose and the American professional dancer who fell in love as they danced the perfect Viennese Waltz on last year's Strictly - I doubt whether half these people would have made the trip. But they have. They have paid their money and perched their bums on the seats of the Shaftesbury Theatre on this Saturday afternoon. The Burn the Floor creative team chose their star draws wisely for the London leg of this show which has been touring the globe since 1999.

The tagline of Burn the Floor is Ballroom Reinvented - and so it has been. The show takes the international style of the ten dances - five ballroom and five Latin - and spins them into fast-moving group events, mixing up the moves and chucking in some stunning physical feats. Limbs entwine themselves, heads spin inches off the floor, legs bicycle through the air, perfectly muscled and waxed torsos shine, and sweat arcs across the stage from the leaping bodies. In between there is still place for some quiet elegance and touches of romance.

Each dance carries its own short story. In 'Fishes', Sacha Farber is a flirty young man who gets in trouble for having too many girlfriends. In a samba, Karen Hauer is surrounded by semi-naked men who vie for her attention - she then proceeds to dance blindfold, perhaps to protect her eyes from their glistening chests - and decides not to have any of them. Damon Sugden and Rebecca Sugden perform a beautiful waltz accompanied by a lone violin: star-crossed lovers maybe, dancing their last dance and creating a haunting stillness in the theatre.

The sheer physical energy is stunning, maintained by regular changes of personnel and choreography while touring to keep bodies and creativity fresh. Jason Gilkison, the show's choreographer, was in the theatre keeping an eye on the action on stage. The cast is simply outstanding - professional dancers at the peak of their ability, many of whom have served time on various international versions of Strictly.

Some moments left me gasping - one dance closed with a dancer turning in a hold as if her legs were the hands of a clock, hitting the hour just as a bell chimed. Another ends with a dancer spinning around on the stage floor - stopping dead on the beat.

There is humour too, with Sacha's cheeky chappy act and his dive to the floor just as the final curtain fell. Some may have been inadvertent - the afternoon audience tittered as a male dancer reprised John Sergeant's 'sack of potatoes' move in the Paso - I'm not sure that this was quite the intention. The show was perhaps tighter in the evening performance (OK, I admit, I went to that too), although that might have been because I was sitting closer to the stage.

The first half had perhaps too many fast group dances - they mostly seemed to be set in a bar - but the ebb and flow of the second half works better: a wonderful rumba by Sarah Hives and Jeremy Garner stands out - two lovers twist and turn to Burn for You. The seemingly impossible hold Sarah achieves by hooking her leg around Jeremy's thigh and stretching herself horizontally behind his back won deserved applause at both performances. These two diminutive dancers really stood out for me - they might be mini but they pack a mighty amount of star quality.

Also outstanding were the musicians - notably singers Ricky Rojas and Rebecca Tapia, whose vocal power is simply breathtaking. Ruth Lorenzo, a former X-Factor contestant, was the guest singer and did surprisingly well - a West End musical career beckons, I suspect. Congratulations also to the stage production and lighting teams - usually unsung heroes - for their skilful work in such a fast-moving show.

Disappointingly, Ali and Brian appear only fleetingly - they skip across the stage in the second dance to a waltz and are gone in a couple of minutes. They then appear in a rumba and the group dance - Dirty Boogie - that closes the first half. The second half sees them waltz again and join the final group numbers. But the audience loves them - just their appearance on stage leads to a burst of applause.

I can understand that there are limitations on what Ali can do as the only non-professional in the show but surely she could have been given a full dance to perform - she did two during the Strictly celebrity tour plus group dances. In one of their waltzes, Ali and Brian dance across the stage and then exit - and the dance is finished by another couple. Why? In their rumba, they are on stage twice but for no more than a couple of minutes total. Why? What they did was lovely - the rumba was romantic and heartfelt - and there were plenty of 'awww' moments for their fans. In the group numbers, Ali threw herself into the action with huge infectious enthusiasm, more than holding her own with the professional dancers.

But the real heartbreaker is how little dancing Brian does. During the Dirty Boogie, he and Ali join the other dances in a rollocking group dance but then leave the stage half way through. I felt like standing up and shouting - don't go! Luckily they return after a couple of minutes. Brian takes his place at the front of stage - and simply outclasses every other performer around him, giving a tantalising glimpse of what might have been if he had been given a larger role.

Perhaps time constraints - it was less than a week between the Strictly professional tour ending and Burn the Floor opening - that prevented this. But Strictly's loss is clearly Burn the Floor's gain - the creative energy and freedom to play with traditional styles clearly suit Mr Fortuna more than the restrictions and petty humiliations that go along with employment at Britain's state broadcaster. I would not be surprised if he continues to work with the Burn the Floor team, hopefully when it tours the UK next year, as has been rumoured.

Burn the Floor creates a vibrant and entertaining montage of dances that show just how flexible and creative dance can be - it gets its audiences' feet tapping and their hearts lurching. But what was frustrating was the lack of a linking narrative to hold all these stories together. Just as you have been pulled into a scene, it ends, leaving you thinking, now is this connected to the bit we just saw, or is it something different, where are we going now? It would be interesting to see how much further the creative team could go. In opera and ballet, well-worn storylines have been reworked for modern times, taking the genres to new levels - Rome & Juliet retold in 1950s New York in West Side Story, Swan Lake rewritten for an all-male cast by Matthew Bourne. Could this be the next step for ballroom?

Brian in talks with Fever Media

Brian is in discussions about a new project with London-based TV production company Fever Media, which produced Dancing on Wheels. Brian was the lead choreographer on the show which aired on BBC3 earlier this year.

There are no details available about the project which is still in the discussion stages.

A spokeswoman said that Fever Media wanted to work with Brian again because 'we all loved working with him on Dancing on Wheels'.

The Dancing on Wheels format - where wheelchair dancers and their able-bodied partners compete in a Strictly-type competition - was promoted at international TV trade show MIPTV under the Fremantle Media umbrella but has not yet been sold abroad.

Brian solves the mystery of Ali's toe

Ali's toe injury during Week 7 in last year's Strictly was caused by her tripping over the couch at Brian's flat, according to an interview in this week's Woman's Own. She was running to answer the phone and banged into the furniture, bending back her toe - ouch!
Brian talks about the risks of injuries and how his mother warns him to be extra cautious - "Don't ski, go motorbiking or go skating."
Brian also claims that he and Ali are not living together - yet - but says that they are "incredibly happy".

Brian "disappointed" by Strictly changes

Brian says he was "very disappointed" by the decision of Strictly producers to try to change his role in the next series by not giving him a celebrity partner.
"I thought I was a real part of the show, part of the family. But they didn't feel it," he tells New magazine.
Brian, and four other professional dancers, were instead asked to be part of a "dance troupe" performing routines. Brian then decided to quit the show.
"Going to be a member of a dance troupe in the background on Strictly is not the right thing for me," he explains.
In the interview, Brian admits that not making the Strictly final with Ali last year was "one of the most disappointing experiences of my life" but, he says, he won overall because he met Ali and they are both moving on to bigger and better things.

Ali to dance live in the West End this weekend

Ali will be performing with the Burn the Floor cast on Sunday 20th June as part of West End Live 2010. It has not been confirmed whether Brian will also be performing as he is currently on the road with the Strictly pro tour.

West End Live is a free open-air event in Leicester Square that showcases performances from theatre shows and musicals in London's West End.

As well as Burn the Floor, acts from many London shows will feature in West End Live, including Legally Blonde, Sister Act, Chicago and Mamma Mia.

Ali and Brian have been rehearsing for their appearances in Burn the Floor which starts on 21st July at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London's West End. They have both been working with Robin Windsor who is leaving Burn the Floor to join Strictly this autumn.

West End Live at Leicester Square takes place on Saturday 19th June and Sunday 20th June, from 11am to 6pm on Saturday and 12pm to 6pm on Sunday. Burn the Floor is scheduled to appear on Sunday - no time has been specified.

Hammersmith pro tour Sunday dates cancelled

The two pro tour shows on Sunday 11th July at the Hammersmith Apollo have been cancelled. The pro tour will now only appear for three shows in London, Friday 9th July and two shows on Saturday 10th July.

No reason for the cancellation has been given but 11th July is also the date of the World Cup final which may have affected ticket sales.

Bolton on, Accrington off

The Albert Halls in Bolton have confirmed that the Brian and Kristina show on 19th July will go ahead, as far as they know. There are still a few tickets available for what could be their last show together.

However, Brian and Kristina will not now appear at the finale of the Time to Dance celebration in Accrington on 31st July as it clashes with Brian's appearance in Burn the Floor. Their place will be taken by another Strictly professional dancer couple - possibly Darren and Lilia - who will appear with James and Ola at the event.

The venue has not yet had final confirmation of the replacement couple.

BBC responds to unhappy Strictly fans

The BBC has published a response to the complaints it has received about the changes to professional dancers' roles in Strictly which I have cut and pasted below.

However, their response does not explain why Brian was chosen to be in the "dance troupe" rather than in his previous role as mentor and partner to a celeb.

It should also be pointed out that the three new female dancers who joined in 2009 replaced Camilla and Karen who had decided to leave the show voluntarily, and Hayley Holt.

But the fact that the statement has been published so soon after the decision was made public does show that the BBC's complaints department has received enough flak to prompt it to provide some sort of response, even though it is a load of old claptrap.

Strictly Come Dancing, unhappy with changes affecting the professional dancers

Publication date: 11 June 2010

Complaint

We've received complaints from viewers who are unhappy with the changes made to the line up of professional dancers for this year's Strictly Come Dancing.

The BBC's response

There is a history of change with the line-up of professional dancers on the show. As with any long-running series we want to keep the format as fresh as possible, and with three new female dancers joining last year, it's fantastic to be able to bring in three new male dancers for this series. We're very excited by the new additions, and it means that with the introduction of a professional group, the show will be bigger, better and more spectacular than ever before.

Click here if you would like to visit the BBC Complaints page to find out more.

BBC Points of View also acts as a forum for viewers' opinions, although it is not clear when the next programme is scheduled. See here for the website.

Brian to leave Strictly

Brian will not be appearing in the next series of Strictly Come Dancing, it was announced today. Following the decision by the BBC to revamp the show, he has taken the decision to concentrate on Burn the Floor, the stage show in which he and Ali will star this summer.

Brian told the Press Association: "I really enjoyed working on Strictly over the years - loved the fans and loved all the people I got work with - but there are changes planned for the next season so I've decided not to return to the show. Both Ali and I are looking forward to seeing all our fans at the Shaftesbury Theatre."

In the next series, 14 dancers, including three new male professionals, will partner celebrities and other pro dancers will create a "dance troupe" for the show. Brian was offered a role in the dance troupe but appears not to have been asked to partner a celebrity.

Ali and Brian get it off their chests for CF

Ali and Brian are supporting a campaign to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis, the UK's most common inherited life-limiting condition, by wearing their Get It Off Your Chest T-shirts.
Brian also signed Ali's sparkly Charleston shoes which she donated to support the campaign.
Ali says that cystic fibrosis is an issue that is "very close to my heart". When she was 15, she starred in a film with Trevor Eve and Amanda Redman called Next Birthday, about teenagers with the disease.
Lorraine Barnes, who has two sons with CF, is sending out the Get It Off Your Chest T-shirts to celebrities.

Competitions for pro tour tickets

The Strictly Come Dancing The Professionals tour is well under way, having just arrived in Cardiff after visiting Dublin last week, and the reviews have been brilliant.
Audiences are "extremely lively and always give a standing ovation at the end of each show," Brian told the Formby Times.
Kristina explained that the professionals have had a lot of input: "We’ve been able to choose the music for our solo pieces,” she said.
The Formby Times, based on Merseyside, interviewed Brian and Kristina ahead of the tour arriving in Liverpool on 21 June. The newspaper has a competition running to win four pairs of tickets - the deadline is Monday 31 May.
The Mature Times also has a pro tour ticket competition - the lucky winners will be able to see the show on Friday 9th July in London.

Dancing "fixed my brain inside"

This isn't about Team Awesome and it isn't about ballroom dancing but I was left awestruck by a recent BBC3 documentary about Jimmy Hobley, a 10-year-old disco dancer from Redcar in the north east. The film followed Jimmy and his family as he competed in national competitions and he just sparkled with natural talent and a love for dancing. Oh, and he also has autism, as do his two brothers.
Two years ago, Jimmy could not read or write, and found eye contact with others difficult. After developing a passion for dance, his reading and writing skills improved dramatically, and he also began to interact more.
His mother Sheila believes that dancing has been the key to transform her son because it required him to improve his concentration in order to master the routines.
"I think since he started dancing there's been a massive improvement. It's like someone switched the light on," she says.
"Before the dancing, I was a nobody," says Jimmy. "I was a regular school kid with special needs. Dancing makes me feel like I'm normal… like all the other kids… it's like somebody's fixed my brain inside."
But Jimmy's success has also has repercussions in his family - his twin George and older brother Alex look on as Jimmy shines in his new-found passion.
The film sees Jimmy visit a ballet school and ends with the World Disco Championships in Blackpool Tower.

On a slightly bizarre note, the documentary is narrated by Craig Kelly, the infamous celeb dancer on Strictly 2009, who was finally ditched by the public at, yes, Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

Thursday 29 April 2010

I was fortunate enough to see Brian and Kristina perform in a sold-out show in Yeovil in March - the dancing was simply stunning and it was a wonderful evening.
So I can understand why the cancellation of several Brian and Kristina shows because of contractual problems with the pro tour has left some fans upset and disappointed.
It must also be incredibly difficult for Brian and Kristina to be forced to cancel shows knowing the disappointment that will cause to fans whose support they have worked so hard to earn.
I hope those fans will be able to see Brian and Kristina, or Brian and Ali, at another event in the year. Hopefully, new events can be arranged once the contractual problems have been sorted out.
I was not able to see the Strictly tour and I don't know if I will get to see the pro tour or Burn the Floor. But even so, I am still inspired by the qualities that Ali and Brian showed during Strictly last year - grace, elegance, commitment, consideration for others, and a striving for excellence.
I hope Brian and Kristina will not be too downhearted - this too shall pass, as they say, and the Fortuna Fantastics and Team Awesomers will still be queueing up to see Brian, Ali and Kristina in whatever shows they perform in the future - and bringing their banners, pompoms and watermelons along too.
As Brian says, go big or go home.
